The “Base Tape Hydrating Primer” by Tarte comes in a glass bottle with a gold lid that has the Shape Tape collection’s signature zig-zag design in blue. The primer can be dispensed through the built-in gold-colored pump. And the brand and product information are inscribed in purple and blue on the bottle.
This primer has a creamy but liquid consistency and a silky texture.
The product has a mild scent that lingers after application.
This product is available in 20 different shades that range from soft nudes to medium pinks and dark browns, reds and purples. We tested the liquid lipstick in “Trouble:” a dusty rose shade.
Apply the primer by dispensing 1 or 2 pumps and massaging them on a clean face using your fingertips.
When we tested the “Base Tape Hydrating Primer” by Tarte we noticed that it makes the skin look and feel refreshed. The product diffuses fine lines and reduces the appearance of pores which makes the skin look smoother. The primer has a matte finish and does not have a sticky feel. The product did improve the wearability of makeup and allowed it to stay put for longer periods of time. It was very easy to layer on top of the primer as it did not crease. Additionally, the “Base Tape Hydrating Primer” gave the skin a boost of hydration and made it look dewy. The primer did not irritate the skin at all and had a soothing effect. However, after a while, the “Base Tape Hydrating Primer” makes the skin look shiny and aggravates the appearance of oiliness around the t-zone. For this purpose, we recommend using a setting powder in addition to the primer so that there is no appearance of shine or oiliness on problem areas.
The “Base Tape Hydrating Primer” by Tarte sells at $30/30mL which is a median price compared to other products in the same range like Benefit Cosmetic’s “POREfessional Face Primer” which retails at $32/21mL and Too Faced’s “Hangover Replenishing Face Primer” which sells at $34/40mL. However, it remains cheaper than other products in a different range like Giorgio Armani Beauty’s “Fluid Master Primer” which retails at $58/30mL.
