OUR EDITORIAL REVIEW

Packaging:

The “Calendula Herbal Extract Toner” comes in a plastic cylindrical bottle that is transparent and has a white flip-cap. The product information is written in black and golden yellow on a large white label. Because of the transparent nature of the bottle, the bottle appears pale yellow because of the color of the toner itself which can be seen-through. Real calendula petals are also seen floating inside.

Skin Type:

This toner is suitable for normal and oily skin.

Texture:

The toner has a watery-runny texture.

Smell:

The smell of this toner is herbal and flowery, almost like a tea smell. However, the fragrance is mild and goes away a few moments after application.

Application:

After cleansing the face, apply the “Calendula Herbal Extract Toner” on a cotton pad to dampen it. Then, tap the areas of the face that need toning with the cotton pad. Avoid the eye area and follow-up with a hydrating moisturizer.

Effect:

The central ingredient in this Kiehl’s toner is Calendula which is another name for Marigold. This plant has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties and is a popular ingredient in some cosmetic products. We tested this toner on sensitive skin and found that it had no stinging or tingling feeling on the skin. Instead, we found it to have hydrating qualities and an overall soothing effect. After application, the skin felt refreshed. There was no irritation or redness caused by the toner which calmed the skin very nicely. The “Calendula Herbal Extract Toner” is not greasy and regulates the skin’s oil levels by controlling the skin’s oil production. However, given that skin types may vary, this product may not be suitable for acne-prone skin. Even with its alcohol-free feature, the skin may be aggravated by this toner. So, it is best to consult a professional if your skin is prone to acne so as to not irritate it.

Price:

The “Calendula Herbal Extract Toner” comes in three sizes and prices: $21/125 mL; $35/250 mL; and $62/500 mL. The price is fair considering that other toners run in the sam price range. In fact, Lancôme’s “Tonique Confort Comforting Rehydrating Toner” retails at $26/200 mL and Origin’s “Zero Oil Pore Purifying Toner with Saw Palmetto and Mint” sells for $23/150 mL.
